Which law firm offers big money AND big fun?
For nearly 20 years, Fortune has released a list of the 100 Best Companies to Work For. Each year, a few law firms manage to sneak their way onto a list that includes employers like Google, Whole Foods, and IKEA. With companies like that on the list, each year we wonder if the people at Fortune have any idea what they’re talking about — after all, there’s no way a law firm could possibly perform on a similar level.
We try to cover this list every year (see our posts in 2015, 2014, 2012, 2011, 2010, 2009, 2008, and 2007). In 2015, five law firms made the list: Baker Donelson (#30), Alston & Bird (#41), Cooley (#42), Perkins Coie (#46), and Arnold & Porter (#75).

This year, six law firms made the list. Which firms had pay that was high enough, perks that were good enough, and environments that were nurturing enough to make the cut?
The six law firms on this year’s list are… five of the firms that made last year’s list, plus one firm that’s making its first appearance on the list since 2010. It’s worth noting that most of the five firms from last year’s list more or less retained their Fortune ranking, give or take a few slots, but one of them has been on a meteoric rise to the top.
Congratulations to the following six firms on being fun enough for Fortune:
- Cooley: ranked #28, up from #42 last year
- Baker Donelson: ranked #32, down from #30 last year
- Perkins Coie: ranked #37, up from #46 last year
- Alston & Bird: ranked #41, no change from last year
- Arnold & Porter: ranked #81, up from #75 last year
- Orrick: ranked ranked #91, unranked in 2015 (up from #95 in 2010)

Last year, we noted that Cooley had the best work perks by far, what with its spectacular social calendar for associates and staff members, with events like Dancing with the Stars competitions and Nintendo Wii dance-offs. Once again, we’ll have to hand the competition to Cooley, which has risen 72 slots in Fortune’s ranking in the past two years. Where else can you find attorneys doing battle like this in the workplace?
Readers, have these rankings actually been earned? Can you think of a law firm that deserves to be recognized, but hasn’t been? Please feel free to give us your thoughts.
